SCHOOL DESKS

Schools in Tanzania are experiencing rapid growth due to a recently enact compulsory primary school education.  As schools are built (see a page devoted to that), they often lack floors and desks.  When the head teacher at Sinya Primary School was faced with a choice between textbooks and desks, he said desks were the the school's most pressing problem.  Subsequently the project purchased and made arrangements for delivery of 120 desks to that school.

The slide show about desks accessible below shows desks in several schools, and rooms without desks, and many without even floors.  Note that the desks at Bashay Primary School are labeled as having been contributed by OAT.  (OAT = Overseas Adventure Travel)   As OAT takes tour groups to remote places around the world, they encourage each group to contribute something of lasting value to a local community, such as help with a school.

The last three images in the slide show were taken at the wood shop where the 200 desks we ordered were to be made.  80 of these were intended for Nyoka Primary School, and 120 for Sinya, as noted above.

The Tanzanian School Mission Team is trying to raise enough money ($18,000) for 1,000 to be made and delivered in 2004.  Contributions to this project are welcome.  Send contributions to First United Presbyterian Church, Greeley Colorado ( 1321 9th Avenue
